Finland is
still the
cradle of
some of the
most unique
and
extraordinary
bands in the
music scene.
KATRA proves
to be no
exception to
the rule and
sets out to
conquer the
world with
their
special
brand of
Gothic
Metal.
The beginnings of KATRA date back to 2006, when vocalist Katra Solopuro aligned with several musicians, who had formerly played in bands such as Lovex, My Fate, Nocturn, Minerva and Sonicmind. Some of these bands absolved shows with Timo Kotipelto, Hanoi Rocks, Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen) and Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake).
In particular, bass player Johannes and guitarist Kristian had already made themselves a name with the Dark Metal band Nocturn. They released an album in the early nineties and shared the stage with such prominent acts as Amorphis, Nightwish, Ancient Rites, Thy Serpent and many more. After their departure from Nocturn, Johannes and Kristian played a varied mix of styles including Pop, Metal, Rock, and even Jazz. As such, both musicians command a high level of musical expertise, which can be heard in KATRA.
The band’s frontlady, Katra Solopuro, began her careeer as a background vocalist for Essentia and Loves. Classical singing and piano lessons were also a part of her curriculum. Katra knows how to use her voice to give each song depth and sincerity. She creates melodies and refrains that will leave few unmoved. Her charismatic appearance and stage performance always enthrals the audience.
The renowned Finnish producer Risto Asikainen brought the band into his studio and worked with them on the first KATRA tracks. Inspired and encouraged by the aura of professionalism tied to this experience, the band was able to reach new heights of performance and musicality.
KATRA’s first single “Sahara” became a huge radio hit and was followed by their self-titled debut album in the spring of 2007. A tour of Finland soon followed and shortly thereafter, Napalm Records took notice of their talents, offering them a worldwide recording contract.
On their Napalm Records debut release “Beast Within”, the Finnish formation raises the Gothic Metal stakes. Classic rock instrumentation, tender harmonies, and heavy Metal arrangements set the tone for the varied compositions over which Katra's strong vocals, capable of getting under your skin, reign. The eponym understands how to not only use her voice, but also her many charms to lure the listener under her spell. "Beast Within" reveals a broad spectrum of Gothic Metal with folk influences that ranges from catchy hits to sensual ballads accentuated by a very powerful production. KATRA stands for longing, love, and passion set to music.
